Gifts for sheep Farmers

Do you need some last minute holiday gift ideas? Are you at a lose for what to buy the shepherd in your life? Here are a few ideas to add to your list of gifts for sheep farmers.

Last minute gifts for sheep farmers…

  1. Head lamps– Our head lamps are probably the most used piece of equipment we own. They are invaluable to us! We use them during lambing season, sugaring season, power outages, trouble shooting in the basement, quick night time trips to the barn, and seeing in those hard to get to kinds of places.  Ours have lasted many many years. The first set we purchased have officially been worn out and we are now hoping that Santa fills our stocking with more this year.
  2. Women’s Insulated Work Gloves-I struggled for years wearing men’s work gloves. Regardless of the size, they just never fit quite right. Once I discovered Carhartt Women’s Work-Flex gloves, I have been thrilled. These gloves fit well and are not too bulky or too stiff. They are the perfect size gift to fit into your Christmas stocking too!
  3. Fiber Wash-Every shepherd needs soap formulated especially for washing wool! This past year, I discovered Namaste Farm’s line of wool washing soap. I love it! They have formulated two different soaps, one for using prior to dyeing fiber, and one for washing super dirty raw fleece. They offer both gallon size for under your Christmas tree or 16oz. bottles that slip right into your Christmas stocking!
  4. Hoof Trimmers-Every shepherd could use a couple pairs of hoof trimmers! We have tried several brands of hoof trimmers and have finally found the pair we love the most. They are put out by Premiere. I like the shape of the blade on these trimmers. Some trimmers have a curved blade which I find cumbersome in trying to clip hooves.
  5. Supplies for doing your own fecal tests-I keep a lab area set up in my studio all during the summer where I can check my own fecal samples for parasite eggs. If I have a sheep that I am concerned about, I can grab a sample and do my own testing in about 10 minutes time. The procedure is easy to learn and the supplies are not too expensive. The flotation solution will last you a very long time. Here is what you will need: McMaster slide, Flotation Solution, and Microscope. (This microscope comes with a mechanical stage which is essential for holding the slide in place.)
