Three Things to Love About Gotlands: Part I

posted in: Gotland sheep 0

We have had Gotland sheep on our farm for two years now. In that time, we have discovered many things that we love about Gotlands and their personalities. I thought I would share with you some of our most favorite character traits.

Gotland Sheep – Fun Loving & Playful

It is a delight to go out and do chores each day. The young Gotland ewes always find a way to bring a smile to my face. The new snow over the past week, has made them frisky and playful. They find games to play, both inside the barn and out. A few weeks ago, they enjoyed games of leap frog on top of a tall stack of hay in our barn. They would climb to the top of the stack and then jump to the floor, over and over again.

This week, they discovered that things in their paddock have grown much shorter due to our recent snowstorms, or they have indeed grown taller. One morning, my husband walked out with an armload of hay to put in our square bale hay feeder. Much to his surprise, one of the little ewes had jumped on top of the feed box roof. Later that day, my daughter and I took cameras in hand when we did evening chores. I wanted to capture their game of dancing on the hay feeder. We had to do a little coaxing to get one of the ewes to jump up on the box, but once there, she was quite proud of herself. The other ewes gathered around, envious that they did not get a turn. Since then, I have caught each of the young fun loving ewes dancing on the roof of their hay feeder.
